Why Heat Is the Enemy of Fresh Flowers

If you live in a warm climate like southern Spain, you already know the challenge: beautiful blooms can wilt within hours when temperatures soar. The good news? With a few simple techniques, you can extend the life of your flowers significantly — even in the height of summer.

1. Trim the Stems at an Angle

As soon as you receive your bouquet, trim at least 2–3 cm off the bottom of each stem at a 45° angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption and prevents the stems from sitting flat against the bottom of the vase, which can block water uptake.

Tip: Use sharp scissors or a floral knife — never tear or crush the stems.

2. Use Cold Water and Change It Daily

In hot weather, bacteria multiply quickly in vase water. Fill your vase with cold or room-temperature water and change it every day. Each time you change the water, re-trim the stems slightly to keep them fresh and open.

Adding a small ice cube to the water on especially hot days can help keep the temperature down.

3. Keep Flowers Away from Heat Sources

Avoid placing your flowers:

  • In direct sunlight or near windows that get afternoon sun
  • On top of appliances that generate heat (TVs, fridges, ovens)
  • Near air conditioning vents that blow dry air directly on them
  • Next to fruit bowls — ripening fruit releases ethylene gas, which accelerates wilting

The ideal spot is a cool, shaded area with good air circulation.

4. Mist the Petals Lightly

In dry, hot climates, petals can dehydrate quickly. A light mist of water over the blooms (not the stems) once or twice a day helps maintain moisture. Use a small spray bottle and mist from a distance to avoid waterlogging delicate petals.

5. Use Flower Food — or Make Your Own

Most bouquets come with a small sachet of flower food. Use it! It contains the right balance of nutrients, sugar, and antibacterial agents to keep your flowers healthy.

If you've run out, you can make a simple DIY version:

  • 1 litre of water
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of white vinegar or a few drops of bleach

Mix well and use as your vase water.

6. Refrigerate Overnight (If Possible)

One of the best-kept secrets of professional florists: store your flowers in the fridge overnight. Remove them from the vase, wrap loosely in paper, and place them in the coolest part of your fridge (away from fruit). This dramatically slows down the ageing process.

Even a few hours of cool storage can add days to the life of your bouquet.

7. Choose Heat-Tolerant Varieties

When ordering flowers for a warm environment, ask your florist for varieties that naturally last longer in heat. Good options include:

  • Chrysanthemums — robust and long-lasting
  • Alstroemeria — excellent vase life
  • Tropical flowers (anthuriums, birds of paradise) — built for warm climates
  • Sunflowers — surprisingly resilient in heat

Delicate flowers like garden roses, sweet peas, and ranunculus are more sensitive and need extra care in summer.
